For me the landscape is about tranquility and peacefulness.

For me the landscape is about tranquility and peacefulness. There is a poetry in texture, color and space – in earth, flora, water and sky. We may all find common bonds in the appreciation of nature and a spiritual nurturing less evident in a world dominated by politics, consumerism and crass communication. As an artist I would like to take the viewer into a quiet world of solitude, reverence and contemplation.
Water, its reflections and movement, is an integral part of my paintings as well as the textures and colors found in surrounding areas, especially marshes.
I paint with gouache (opaque watercolor) building up layers of color on black archival board. I also do mixed media pieces, extending the landscape using paintings, pieces of paintings, color copies of the paintings, handmade papers and my photos which have inspired the artwork.
Our summer home is located in the 1000 Islands, NY. Local landscapes, and coastal marshes have inspired much of my work.

I paint with gouache, building up layers of color on black archival board. Gouache, pronounced "gwash" (rhymes with wash) is opaqure or nontransparent watercolor. It comes in tubes like oil paint, although it also comes in dry "cakes" like children's watercolor. In transparent watercolor, the artist allows the paper to show through the paint to create white or light areas. WIth gouache, I use white paint alone to produce the whites or add it to colors to produce the pale tints in my paintings.

After doing gouache landscape painting for a number of years, I was drawn to the challenge of expressing a similar but more challenging conception of a peaceful landscape using mixed media. Incorporating paintings, parts of paintings, my photos from which the paintings were inspired, color copies of similar paintings and beautiful handmade textured and colored papers, I create an alternative vision of river and coastal marshes.

While shopping for frames in a local thrift shop, I spotted a bag filled with beautifully colored ribbon. I bought it and upon closer examination, found it to be hand dyed silk. There were multiple spools and a wonderful array of colors. I immediately decided that rather than wrapping gifts I would find a way to use this treasure trove for some newly imagined artwork. I’m calling the new work “Pathways."
